Speak Up

Speak up to send a strong message.

Some Messages Support Domestic Violence.
We live in a society that, sometimes inadvertently, sends messages that support or justify domestic violence. These messages appear everywhere, including in the media and even in day-to-day conversations. Examples include:

  • “He just looses control sometimes.”
  • “He’s had a really hard life…”
  • “He’s under a lot of stress right now.”
  • “He’s a great father — he’d never hurt the kids.”

These Messages Hurt Victims.
What does a victim hear when she hears these messages? She hears that the abuse was her fault.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.

There's NO Excuse for Abuse.

It is important to SPEAK UP when you hear comments like these that support domestic violence.  Say loud and clear that nobody deserves to be abused, and that abuse is NEVER the victim’s fault.

Know an Abuser? Speak Up.

If you think you know someone who is abusing his partner, find a time to talk to him about it in private.  NEVER confront an abuser in front of others, especially not in front of his victim.  This could put her in great danger.
